Beach Blvd I.T.S. Design, Implementation and Integration
Orange County Transportation Authority
Project Description
ADVANTEC was commissioned by OCTA to provide turnkey service to design and implement a synchronized traffic signal system at 70 intersections along Beach Boulevard. At our recommendations, Caltrans agreed to use the existing 12 pair#19 Copper Interconnect cable for connecting all 72 intersections along Beach Boulevard and transmitting the data & video to Caltrans District 12 TMC via Ethernet-over-Copper communications, thereby saving about $1.5M in conduits/pull-boxes and fiber optic cabling costs. This project was the first Ethernet over Copper project conducted by Caltrans, and it was so successful that other districts referenced it as a prototype to implement in other corridors (see Caltrans Letter in Appendix B)
ADVANTEC assisted Caltrans with replacement of Type 170 controllers with newer Type 2070 controllers and Type 170 Field Master controllers, installation of GPS units, Ethernet-Over-Copper Communications, CCTV cameras design and implementation at 14 designated locations for traffic monitoring, and other support equipment and hardware for developing a robust ITS framework. The detailed tasks related to the ITS deployment works included:
Background data collection - pertaining to traffic signal equipment and operational parameters, intersection geometry, traffic volumes etc.
Procurement, installation and inspection of new Type 2070 Controllers at 68 locations and new Type 170 Field Master Controllers at 6 locations.
Procurement, installation and inspection of GPS units on 6 Master Controller cabinets.
Procurement, installation and inspection of CCTV cameras (Cohu 3920 Model) at 14 locations on existing traffic signal poles.
Procurement, installation and inspection of 80 Ethernet-Over Copper devices (Ruggedcom and Etherwan Switches) for traffic signal and CCTV interface in controller cabinet.
Procurement, installation and inspection of a steel shelf and 6 receptacle power strip with surge protection in each cabinet.
Procurement, installation of new Copper termination panels and re-termination of existing cables.
Procurement, installation and inspection of 12-strand single mode fiber optic cable in existing conduit at the NB I-405 ramp. Repairs to damaged pull-boxes and installation of new pull-boxes was also performed.
Procurement, installation and inspection of video encoders & decoders for video transmission.
Re-configuration of existing splices on freeway fiber optic trunk line.
Network integration at on Beach Boulevard and at Caltrans District 12 TMC to receive real time video images through the newly installed CCTV cameras
